	The Yiddish Policemen's Union by Michael Chabon An alternate-reality SF novel combined with a hardboiled detective yarn. Shouldn't work; in Chabon's hands it does, splendidly. The language in this book?oy, sweetness, it's to die for.
	The Store by Bentley Little A little John Saul, a little John Collier, and a lot of Franz Kafka; think Wal-Mart in hell.
	The Poet by Michael Connelly Simply the best crime novel of the last 15 years or so. Terrifying and persuasive.
